Rat in garden with collar? Possible pet?

Post by Lou777 » Tue Oct 23, 2018 7:07 pm

In the past week I have had a rat coming into my garden and eating the food I put out for hedgehogs, but it has a yellow collar on, I don’t want to hurt it if it’s someone’s pet, but the neighbours have noticed and won’t be so understanding I’m sure. I’m in Essex, can anyone help or suggest what I should do? I’m not home a lot during the day so I’m worried about a humane trap as it may be in there a while.

Hi Lou - I answered on FB, but so long as you can check a trap twice a day, and put plenty of moist food in it, then the rat should be fine until you discover it. It can take rats several days to trust a trap enough to go in, so don't be disheartened if it's empty for quite a while.

I am intrigued about the collar though - does it look like a proper collar with a buckle/fastener? Or could it be a piece of rubbish that has got stuck? If it's a proper collar then it must mean someone knows they are out there, and they are either going home when they want to, or they've got lost - maybe they were on a lead and chewed through it before running off?

I think the best thing to do is trap it, and then leaflet the area to see if anyone's lost their pet. It should be reasonably obvious once you've caught it whether it is tame enough. I'm guessing it is an agouti, the wild colouring?

Once you've caught it and decided it's a pet, you'll need to quarantine, and if you can't find the owner, then the rat will need treatment for parasites, including worms, and a course of antibiotics.
