Vet Name: Both vets - Nicola and Anders
Practice Name: All Creatures
Address: 85 Lavender Hill, Battersea, London, SW11 5QL
Telephone: 0207 228 0648
Website: http://www.allcreatures.co.uk/

Comments:
All Creatures is a lovely, caring, and rat knowledgable practice. It's independently owned (by Nicola) and there's very much that sort of feel to the place rather than 'just another vets'.

Both vets are excellent with rats - both in terms of knowledge/ diagnosis and handling ability. I don't really have a preference which vet I see, although I'll try and keep seeing the same person if there's a continuous health issue. As a client my opinions are listened to and taken on board, rather than being bulldozed over. They're also open to learning information both from me and researching themselves.

Drugs are suggested/ prescribed based on their suitability rather than lisencing. As said before written consent for this is asked for, however other than for legal protection this has never been mentioned since. Dosages suggested are suitable, and drug combos aren't a problem. It is also possible to get larger supplies of medication for 'just in case' at home, and they're more than happy to supply meds from a repeat prescription started elsewhere.

In terms of surgery I've had lumpectomies, routine spays, an emergency spay and a toe amputation done here. Both vets are competent and experienced with small pet/ rat surgery and I've not experienced any issues with the level of care from the nurses as with elsewhere.

With spays and any other 'underneath' op sites the surface stitches are buried in the skin so as to almost completely remove risk of holes being chewed open. This decreases healing time more substantially than using glue.

Prices are mid-range on the whole, but considered cheap given their location. They have a seperate price band for small animal consultations, and medication prices aren't inflated. Surgery is priced by time taken ( /15min anaesthetic slots and /10 min vet slots), but this averages out to £60-72 (inc. vat, pre- and post-op cunsults and covering ABs) - although I've not asked after castrations.

There is a different practice for after hours emergencies (common in central London), but staff are always on site overnight should any animal be kept in for observation.

I have tried out a very large number of vets in SW London and All Creatures are by far my favourite. Given their transport links (just up the road from Clapham Junction station and on a number of bus routes) I would definately say they're well worth travelling to.

They have also competently seen mice and Syrian hamsters of mine/ in my care.

If anyone has any further questions please feel free to PM me. I'm so sad to be moving away from such a lovely and experienced practice.

I would just like to reply to this too!

In my area there is a complete lack of rat savvy vets, I went to All Creatures (travelling about 1.5 hours on trains) for the first time a couple of weeks back after one of my rats developed a lump on his face. From my first contact with them, I was extremely impressed! I was impressed because I was told by the receptionist that she would get the vet to call me back. I agreed, hung up and expected to never hear from them again (which seems to be the what happens with all vets I've used in the past). 20 minutes later, I received a phone call and I spoke with Anders for around 20 minutes and he never once tried to rush me - he listened to my opinions and my worries.

I never actually saw Anders on my visit, I saw Nicola who was amazing. I called the day before when I found out I was going to see her to explain what I agreed with Anders. She never delt with a problem like mine before and she spent the entire day, in between her consultations doing research, calling several specialists around the country to get their opinions. I mean, amazing, right? So, I took him in. I had a "special case", in that I was travelling a long way and they catered for me amazingly well. They booked my appointment so that they could do the operation straight after it so I could take him home without having to make a return journey.

After the operation I encountered several problems with another abscess occuring and they have been supportive every step of the way - they aren't money grabbing. They sent out a repeat perscription without a consultation, something a lot of vets wont do (they could have made an additionally £20+ from me!). They are always on hand for any problems I've had and I really feel like I can call them whenever I need advice with any of the animals (as I have done in the past). I can't say how great they are... they are actually amazing. Even though I've never seen Anders, he always talks to me about problems I have with the rats and has always given me practical advice (even if it means that he tells me not to bring the rats in!).

Costs wise: For a consultation, operation to have the abscess lanced and a look inside of his mouth (about 7 minutes under she said), a 15 day course of Norvoclav tablets, a tub of metacam, 1 x injection of metacam and a pouch of VetiVet saline solution came to a total of £79. I'm not sure how expensive that is as they was the first time I ever needed an 'operation' but all I can say is that it was worth every penny! The post-care I have received from both Nicola and Anders has been amazing.

I really can't recommend them enough.

Vet: Reena Patel,
Address: Medivet Pinner, 2A Pinner Green, Pinner, Middlesex HA5 2AA
Phone:020 8866 0727
I've been going to her for years. Shes done castrations and lump removals, diagnosed and cared for my diabetic boy and the usual respiratory problems etc. She's very caring and I trust her completely. If she hasn't dealt with something before she'll research and is happy to discuss treatments.

The 24 hour emergency vet at Watford also has a few rat savvy vets.

Name: Bradley Curtis
Practice Name: Dacre House Veterinary Clinic
Address: 91 Powder Mill Lane
High Brooms
TUNBRIDGE WELLS
TN4 9EE

Phone: 01892 546000
Website: http://www.dacrehouse.co.uk

Veterinary care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Unlike most clinics around Tunbridge Wells, their out-of-hours service is staffed by their own vets.

All of the vets there are extremely helpful and willing to learn, and to prescribe medication which is recommended on the forums. Bradley is one of the partners and has been looking after my rats for several years - and most other fancy rats in the area. He is a very skilled surgeon and takes great interest in my rats. He has performed several tumour removals and spays, castrations and an eye removal, as well as a spate of abscess-lancing while I hold the rat. He also allows me to hold my rats for euthanasia and then keep them against my chest for the last few minutes, so that the last thing they hear is my heartbeat.

Prices are very reasonable and all the staff are really good.
