If I remember rightly enteroviruses, which cause most viral meningitis cases in humans, are most prevelant in the summer/warm weather. Was the first boys death in the warm weather towards the end of March? Several mammal species can carry them, including humans, and can be symptom-less. It could be that the 2 brothers were susceptible and that the 2 girls were carriers until they got to a relatively old age when their immune system could no longer cope and the timing was just very unlucky? Or their was a re-infection from somewhere due to the warmer weather we've now got.
The rats: Willow, Cissi, Bella and Digit. The gerbils: Clara and Oswin

It does sound like an infection, but I'd check for carbon monoxide and make sure there are no house plants in reach too. You never know. I hope you have no more losses. x
