Rat health warning to people at Alijanes last Sunday

Post by shiprat » Thu May 09, 2013 12:19 pm

I've just found out that 2 dogs who stayed with me last week have gone down with Kennel Cough. :(
ROHR is now in quarantine and had I known this beforehand I would not have taken rats to Alisons. I have PMd those who homed rats from here. I have just researched survival of Bordetella outside the host and found that Bordetella species survive only for a few hours in respiratory secretions - but am posting this in case anyone else went home and immediately handled their rats.

Is it possible to find out which strain of KC the dogs have, or is that impossible? I don't know whether that's actually possible or not! Rats can only pick up the bordetella type; none of the other various options affect them :)

I hope everyone's okay :luck:

If bordetella only survives for a few hours after being in contact then surely we would have symptoms now if we were to have them?

It presents as pneumonia. :(
It survives a few hours in respiratory secretions, so our clothing wouldn't carry it after that, but if it were transmitted to a rat they would then incubate it. The incubation period seems to differ the more I read but I've found 2-14 days.

So we should be looking out for the regular sneezes and sniffles?

Hoping we all get lucky and no one was infected. :luck:

Just as added info, when we had suspected contact with Bordatella, doxycycline was recommended by super-vet as the most effective drug option.

Really hope everyone's rats are going to be ok. Just wanted to add that guinea pigs are also affected by bordatella and can be carried by rabbits who aren't affected by it at all in case anyone happens to have either of those species.

Hope the dogs get better soon Jackie.

I'm seeing the vet in the morning for Huxley's post-op. I will ask if he thinks its worth blanket treating with doxy, as I had old River there with me.
