Never Seen This Before.... Help please? huge head swelling

Post by GeekyGoth » Wed Oct 19, 2011 2:18 pm

I've been away and just got back, rats have been with a sitter and well.. i got back to find one of the boys with a massive swelling on his head, apparently came up the day before.
I'm booked in at the vets at 4pm to get it checked out but to be honest i'm going in blind and have no idea what it is... so far an abcess has been suggested (though if so it feels like no other abcess I've ever seen.... it feels solid like its his cranium thats enlarged)
He is very lethargic and also respy (not surprised!)

Any ideas lovely people?

Oh gosh, the poor thing!

My guess would have been an abscess since it's come up so quick. Very unfortunate place to get one though!

Hope your vet gets him sorted whatever it is! :luck:

tend to agree probably abscess -bit too sudden for a tumour -ununsual place
might feel different due to the skin being quite tight over top of head
hope he gets well soon x

Thank you both.... according to the sitter it is about 30% bigger than it was when noticed so it's growing rapidly which would fit with the abcess idea... there is no "head" or pimple on it..

If it is an abcess do you think it's likely they can treat it in that location?

Sounds like the abcess is strating to put pressure on his brain. Wishing you the best of luck <3

I'm back from the vets, got back just gone 4.... It wasn't good news and I'm kinda numb,

She said it was a tumor and that it was inoperable from the looks, and from his lethargy and non co-ordination it was kindest to let him go....
She asked if it would be ok to do a PM on his head/the lump, she said she'd also not seen it before and would like to know to help others, I said yes..

She called me to let me know a few mins ago... it is a little graphic so feel free to stop reading. I'm feeling kinda numb... so shocked, but posting this for those who are interested in the in's and outs of it. From what she said im astounded he was wandering about earlier..

She said she has no idea how he was functioning or how he was even walking, said he shouldnt have been. she confirmed any pain was highly unlikely. She confirmed it was a tumor, appeared to have started external but it had eaten into the skull and met the brain. The frontal and rear lobes were damaged, and his brain stem also heavily damaged, there was also signs of recent hemmoraging, so she thinks that he was hanging in, then had the hemmorage causing the fit and loss of most awareness and movement

I'm so sorry sweetheart. Thank you for sharing the details, that must have been hard on you. I had a rat once with a similar sounding tumour. It just appeared one day, a huge cheek swelling. She was operated on five days later and not woken up. Tumour that had started external and eaten through her cheek bones. Whether they are really sudden or just hard to detect initially I don't know. I'm sharing your pain and sending you hugs :hearts:

Thank you both so much, I am astounded from what she said that he was still wandering around this morning.

I'm sorry to hear about your little one Katie, sounds horrible.... the vet said about Rileys that it appeared to be a really fast growing one
