Do people use hay for their rats?

Post by Tilly » Thu Sep 06, 2012 12:46 pm

When I got my rats they came to me in a cage bedded on cat litter (clay type) and hay as a bedding. Now I changed the litter for newspaper and they seem to like that. And scatter tissue about for them to carry it up to the sputniks. I have hay already so wondered if it was a normal and ok thing to do to give rats hay to bed on if they want it? I had never seen rats bedded on hay before but I do have some because we have guinea pigs also. The only worry with hay is the risk of mites and lice (which my guinea pigs get occasionally from the hay and need dropping with ivermecetin)

Anyway, after that waffle I wanted to ask.. HAY... YAY OR NAY!

I sometimes give mine hay, I think they enjoy it as a natural nesting material and I like the smell of it :D

Mine get hay for digging in at free range once a week. I daren't risk bringing anymore than that past piggies for fear of the neighbours complaining about the squeals "THAT'S OUR HAY!!" they'd be going.

Yes, mine have it too and my mice. I have a hanging treat thingy in the cage and I put a little hay in that for them, they love it. I have lovely fresh meadow hay for my piggies , so the rats and mice have a little share !! :D

yeah i give mine hay from time to time as a nesting material. it gets smelly quick when they wee in their beds but otherwise they enjoy it its a natural thing and much nicer for rats to build nests out of. mine like to carry it around and nibble it into smaller pieces

I used to give mine hay to nest with....but they spent far too much time eating it, rather than nesting in it...so I changed to straw
