Silly question? Where's their colour go!?

Post by lah185 » Wed Sep 02, 2015 8:01 pm

can anyone explain why rats fur fade so much in colour?
my one year old female rat had a very dark grey stripe head to tail down her back when I bought her and now she's almost all white!
it was the same with 2 of my older rats grey to white in about 6 months.

Roans can fade to white or retain some of their grey. Remi was a roan, before I knew what roans were and his patterns changed weekly, he had a lovely grey diamond at one point, before turning all white. I don't know enough about why though.

this picture was taken aboit 2 months ago
Minnie (black stripe), has also colour loss and her stripe isn't as long (which iv only just noticed!)
jazz (grey) is darker in this picture than she is now, but she was very very dark grey when I bought her
how odd!

Yes, they are both roans. Minnie may keep some of her colour but jazz may go white. Lovely girls though

To be honest, I'm not very good on that side of things, hopefully somebody else can answer you.

My understanding of the way that roaning works and the thing that makes roan different than a perminant marking like say hooded is that each time the fur moults there is chance that the pigment producing cells switch off, this is more likley to happen the further from the central line of the spine, this gives you the roaning effect as over time more and more switch off

People often ask on here about their roans changing colour.

Roans do look very attractive as kittens, and that is why the pet shops stock a lot of them (and hence why there are lots in rescue too) - they don't care that the new owners won't know that their rats will roan out and may become completely white, some staff probably don't even know that will happen, and if they do then they wouldn't want to explain in case it lost them the sale. (Can you tell I don't like the pet trade? lol)

Haha cyber ratty I do sense some angst against pet shops there !
it's doesn't bother me that they are changing colour, I just thought it was a ratty way of ageing (going grey) haha.
