Have we found a wild or fancy rat - help please.

Post by jediblood » Thu Sep 03, 2015 1:47 am

Hi

We found a small brown rat wandering outside our house tonight. It looks as though she has something on her fur on her back that she can't clean off. She let me pick her up and put her in an old cage. Her breathing seems a little laboured but she's eaten a bit of food.

How can I tell whether she's a wildie or not please?

Thanks a lot

Jackie

Also how do I upload a photo pls?

I would have thought if she has let you pick her up she could be a pet but I'm not sure how an ill rat would behave.

Hopefully Laura, will be along to give you some advice.

Half way down this post is instructions for photos.

Good luck.

Have tried to put a few pics on photobucket. The little rat has done a good job cleaning her fur overnight and seems a bit brighter. What I need to know is what to do next?

Thanks

Do you have rats of your own or other pets?

Have had rats in the past. Got a lurcher and greyhound now - not good with a small furry.

Been vets - he says it's a young wild rat. I can feed it up and release it if I want though it seems to be flat and lethargic again now.

S/he does look very poorly, hunched up and spikey up fur can indicate illness. I think it would be kindest to et him/her put to sleep x
