Introducing new rats to resident cats?

Post by oreodaisy » Fri Nov 17, 2017 11:48 am

I recently adopted two female rats, Oreo and Daisy. I have two, 1 year old neutered male cats, Shawn and Gremlin. Is these a way for cats and rats to co-exist happily? I am committed to all four of these animals.

I have a group of rats and have had various groups for 6 years, I also have a cat. I do not let the rats out in the same place as the cat. I know people say that cats make rats nervous as they are natural prey for them, but I can say I have seen no evidence. However, it doesn’t mean to say that there isn’t any. I certainly wouldn’t trust my cat around them. I would ensure that the cage is in a position that the cat cannot get to it or jump onto it. There is also the danger that a cat could get bitten by a rat too. So best to have them avoid each other.
Officially ratless. Groot, Star-lord, Yondu adopted by another rat lover.

Exactly what Caza said. I had cats and rats for many years without any issues, but they should never meet without secure bars between them.
