My rat is sick. Please help!

Post by emillyt20 » Fri Aug 14, 2020 4:35 pm

My rat started with some respiratory problems a few weeks ago. I went to a vet and started treating him with anti-biotics and antiinflammatories. It all went well and he got better. But a few days ago he started becoming worst. Much like the first time. I sent a message to the vet and he told me to do the same treatment. But this time the rat won't get better (he isn't getting worst at least). And he is not eating. He is walking around and drinking water but just won't eat. I talked to the vet but he doesn't know what to do because he is no specialist and I don't have one in my area. If anyone know what to do, please help.

A rat that isn't eating needs veterinary treatment. If you're in the UK, check in this Facebook group to see if there are any recommended vets in your area:

You don't necessarily have to see an exotics specialist; some "regular" cat/dog vets also have a good amount of experience with rodents. It's worth calling around other vets in your area to see if any of them have more experience than your current vet. I'm a bit surprised your vet apparently has no idea what to do next though; for an infection that won't shift, trying a different antibiotic or antibiotic combo would be an obvious next step.

Standard treatments for rat respiratory infections are:
- enrofloxacin at 10mg/kg bodyweight twice a day (most commonly prescribed by vets, and sometimes underdosed, so check the dosing)
- doxycycline at 5mg/kg bodyweight twice a day
- enrofloxacin and doxycycline together, dosed as above
- co-amoxiclav at 100mg/kg bodyweight twice a day, if an infectious agent other than Mycoplasma is suspected

If the rat is really struggling to breathe he may need oxygen, which would mean staying at the vets.
Poo-shoveller to: Calyn (NLA32); Zephyr Nyahir; Zephyr Zymandis; Zephyr Blasto.
Fondly remembering: Zephyr Mick Jagger "Edgeworth"; Din (NLA28); Zephyr Donovan "Phoenix"; Xeltan; Lita (NLA32); Lia (NLA28); Zephyr Delanynder (NLA28); Falere (NLA36); Mirala (NLA36); Zephyr Opold; Rila.
