cage advice

Post by Morrigan » Sun Apr 10, 2022 3:08 pm

does anyone use either the hamberley all metal cage https://www.littlepetwarehouse.co.uk/pr ... -cage.html

or

Ferplast Large Ferret Cage FURET XL
https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00UVK965 ... _lig_dp_it

i have been looking at getting a couple of rats for a few months now and i have the food sorted, got some hammocks and toys so now its just which cage to get, i know i will need to make a base for the hamberley but thats ok i can make a box from acrylic that is can sit in

i just need to know if anyone has used either one and can let me know how good or bad they are

Hi, welcome to the forum and a life of rat keeping! :luck:

The hamberley is the minimum size I'd recommend for rats, so if you can go bigger then do so.
The XL is a great size, but it is literally as big as an armchair, so some people find it difficult to reach into the back corners when furnishing it. It's also very expensive now, and there a good cages for much less or better cages for about the same.

I'd look at the coco 100 if you want a group of up to 5 (bigger and cheaper than the hamberley), or the pet planet (bigger and about the same price as the XL) if you have the extra space/budget.

Also, I would start with a trio of rats rather than just two, because they do best in groups of 3 or more due to being colony animals.

You may find the articles on this site helpful https://azulinerattery.wordpress.com/caring-for-rats/, and the isamu rats channel on youtube has lots of good information if you prefer videos.
